Overview of the ICAL CALL Certificate
The ICAL CALL Certificate course is an introduction to using computers in language teaching. It is not a technical course on using computers, but rather a course on using CALL techniques in the class.
Each module consists of reading material which includes plenty of examples and explanations. At the end of each module there's an assignment. This is written and sent to your personal tutor for grading and comments. Throughout the course you're encouraged to work with your tutor on technical and other aspects of the material.
The ICAL CALL Certificate course is divided into 5 modules:
Module 1
In this first module, we introduce the subject of CALL and it covers the basics, introducing common terms and ideas. It looks at what CALL is, then some common concepts and misconceptions about the subject. It prepares the ground by looking at why we use computers in the classroom and then goes on to look at the disadvantages of doing so. The assignment checks your general understanding of basic computer functions and computer related subjects.
Module 2
This module looks at setting up a CALL classroom. It covers all aspects from a first shopping list, overall design, basic hardware & software, to a final budget. The assignment asks you to create a similar scenario for your own school.
Module 3
This module examines commonly available software (a Word Processor and graphics program) and sees how it can be put to use in a CALL scenario. It explains setting up an activity and gives several examples of good CALL activities you can try to work on different language skills. The assignment asks you to develop a couple of activities and also perform several Internet related functions.
Module 4
In this module, other software is checked out along with using the Internet. You'll be asked to create a small website of your own as well.
Module 5
This is the final module. It starts by looking at how CALL software should be evaluated and then goes on to examine CALL specific software.
