Student ID

The Password is Good but I'm still having Problems!

Sometimes students tell us they're having problems logging in. In almost every case, there's a very simple reason why they can't get in a and a few simple steps solves the problem.

Step 1 - check your details

Check your Student ID and Password and try logging in again. Make sure that if you've changed your password you're using your new one. Use the password reminder above to get your current password.

Step 2 - refresh

You may well need to just refresh your browser. This means clicking on the REFRESH or RELOAD button.

Another trick is to refresh using Ctrl-F5 in Internet Explorer; this reloads the page entirely.

Technical note: your browser caches pages to make it faster; sometimes it keeps an old version of a page showing without downloading the newer version. Refreshing or reloading makes sure you have the latest version of the page showing on your browser.

Step 3 - enable cookies

This site uses cookies to keep track. If your browser doesn't have cookies enabled then you won't be able to get into the site.

In Internet Explorer this means that you can't have the browser set to disallow all cookies – this will result in your login being rejected. To change the settings in IE, go to Tools – Internet Options then click on the Privacy tab and make sure the slider is not set to Block all cookies. If you use another browser, then check with the browser help system to see how to allow cookies.

Step 4 - remove all cookies

From My Computer, go to the folder Windows/Cookies* and delete all the cookies from your computer. This will sometimes allow a new cookie to be set and thus allow access.

*Depending on which operating system you're using you might find the cookies stored in a different folder to this.

Step 5 - behind a firewall

If you're using a computer on a network (either a private network on in an internet cafe) there's a strong possibility that there's a firewall between your computer and the internet. Check with the system administrator who'll be able to tell you this and - if necessary - make adjustments to the system so that you can log into this site.

Step 6 - check

If you're still not able to log in, try to log in using a friend's computer on another system. If you can this means that one of the settings on your own computer needs to be changed. If you can't then...

...please write to us explaining exactly what the problem is...

Step 7 - tell us:

  1. who you are - send us your Student ID (but keep your password secure; don't send it to anyone)

  2. what operating system you're using (e.g. Windows 98, Windows XP)

  3. what browser you're using (e.g. Netscape, Internet Explorer, Opera)

  4. the version of the browser (e.g. version 6.0 – ideally this should be version 6.0 or later); to find out which version you're using open the browser and click on Help - About where you should be able to see it.

  5. exactly what happens when you try to log in – the more details you can give, the better so, for example, if there's an error message when you try to log in then write it down and let us know exactly what it says
